Caption: Polar research station SP-40. Russian polar explorers in the Arctic, setting up a new drifting station SP-40 (Severny Polyus-40). The first Severny Polyus research station was built in 1937. They are temporary bases designed to allow study of the Arctic Ocean through a whole year while drifting on an ice floe. The second one was established in 1950, with regular stations from 1954 (Severny Polyus-3) to 1991 (Severny Polyus-31). The series restarted in 2003 with Severny Polyus-32. Severny Polyus is Russian for North Pole. Photographed in September 2012.
