Caption: Kjell Henriksen Observatory domes, Svalbard, Norway. These transparent, one-metre wide domes on the rooftop of the Kjell Henriksen Observatory protect optical equipment. The observatory uses both optical and radar dishes to monitor the interaction between solar wind on the Earth's magnetic field. These interactions occur as disturbances in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere and can be observed at high latitudes as the aurora borealis. Solar storms can affect modern telecommunication systems such as satellites, TV signals, telephones, GPS navigation and power systems. Photographed in 2014.
