Caption: Photomultiplier tube. Hand holding a photomultiplier tube which is used within the Meridian Scanning Photometer to measure light intensity of the aurora borealis in Svalbard, Norway. The photometer is located at the Kjell Henriksen Observatory which monitors the interaction between solar wind on the Earth's magnetic field. These interactions occur as disturbances in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere and can be observed at high latitudes as the aurora borealis. Solar storms can affect modern telecommunication systems such as satellites, TV signals, telephones, GPS navigation and power systems. Photographed in 2014.
