Caption: Nuclear power station cooling towers. Night-time view of village buildings and cooling towers for the Dampierre Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Waste energy from the power station is absorbed by water, which is sprayed into the cooling towers where it evaporates. Some of the water condenses and is reused, and some is lost as water vapour into the atmosphere. Located on the River Loire in Dampierre-en-Burly, France, this power station opened in 1980 and is operated by the EDF energy company. Its four pressurized water reactors (PWR) each generate 890 megawatts of power. Photographed in January 2012, in the hamlet of Les Guerets.
