Caption: Diatom-inspired lampshade. This lampshade was inspired by and based upon the exoskeleton of diatoms. Diatoms are single-celled photosynthetic algae that have mineralised cell walls (frustules) that contain silica and provide protection and support. This lampshade is called Quin.mgx, and was designed by Bathsheba Grossman. Photographed in 2012, at an exhibition of objects made from extraordinary materials, at CERTESENS (Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche sur les Technologies du Sensoriel) at the University of Tours, Tours, France.
