Caption: Dissected liver. The liver is the largest gland in the human body. It plays a vital role in metabolism, storing nutrients in forms such as glycogen, and helping to clean the blood of toxins and other waste products. It also produces bile, a liquid that is used to digest fats. The bile is transported in bile ducts and is stored in the gall bladder. Blood is brought to and from the liver in veins and arteries. The hepatic portal vein and the hepatic artery proper form triads where they run alongside each other and the common bile duct.
