Caption: Molecular model of zymogen-E. Zymogen-E is a proenzyme, an inactive precursor molecule of an enzyme. Here, the yellow lines represent the inter-atomic bond 'backbone' of the molecule, and the blue surface defines the shape of the molecule's electron cloud. Proenzymes are normally activated by proteolytic cleavage, forming an enzyme which acts as a biological catalyst. This molecular structure was worked out at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) at Grenoble, France.
