A Stem cell is an unspecialized cell that is capable of replicating itself and developing into specialized cells of a variety of cell types. The process is illustrated here with the hematopoietic stem cell originating in the bone marrow of the femur to become a progenitor cell in the centre (purple) which can then yield more specialized cells such as white blood cells and red blood cells.
