Caption: A diode laser beam (635 nm wavelength) enters (from top left) a transparent acrylic slab and is 'totally' internally reflected several times at the interfaces between the slab and the surrounding air. When light travels from a more optically dense medium to a less optically dense medium and the angle of incidence exceeds a certain value, called critical angle, all the light is reflected back to the more optically dense medium and no light enters the less dense medium. This effect is called total internal reflection. It is the phenomenon responsible for light guiding in an optical fiber. Digitally manipulated.
