Caption: This lumbar spine image is oriented in a supine position and demonstrates the network of nerves within each vertebral segment. The anterior longitudinal ligament (top structure oriented horizontally) can be seen. Immediately below this ligament are the lumbar discs and spaces where the vertebral bodies normally appear. A spinal nerve root can be seen at each vertebral level to exit the neuroforamen and further divide. The smaller nerves seen in the bottom of image are branches of the posterior primary rami that innervate the posterior spine muscles. The long nerve lying adjacent to the anterior longitudinal ligament is the sympathetic chain.
