Caption: The dural sac is depicted in this image as the large horizontal structure in the lower portion of the image. At each spinal level the nerve roots are seen to exit the dural sac. The nerve root divides into the ventral rami and posterior rami. The ventral rami appear to be extending upward while the dorsal rami project downward. Note the smaller nerves branching from the dorsal rami in the lowest portion of the image. These branches innervate the posterior spinal muscles.
