Caption: Satellite image of Al Jawf, an oasis town in Libya's Sahara Desert. The town is at top left. Across the image are agricultural plots that are irrigated by central-pivot irrigation systems, giving them a circular shape. The water is pumped from deep fossil water aquifers as the area receives virtually no rainfall. Image obtained by Japan's ALOS satellite on 24th January 2011.
