Caption: DNA nanorods. Computer graphic of nano-sized rods (orange) linking up to form ladder-like ribbons. These structures form due to the effects of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) 'linker' strands. The laddering effect is due to the collective interactions of the DNA tethers, and may be unique to the nanoscale. This process may have applications in the fabrication of new nanomaterials with desired properties. The research was carried out at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source, both at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. The research was published in 2013.
