Caption: High-temperature superconductor. Artwork of magnetic excitations (black ripples) in a high-temperature superconductor. This phenomenon was studied using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), with the technique shown here. The precise energy change is measured as beams of incident X-rays (blue arrow) strike the quantum ripples and bounce off (red arrow). Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, found that these excitations were present in both superconducting and non-superconducting forms of LSCO (lanthanum, strontium, copper, and oxygen) materials. The research was published in 2013.
