Caption: Laue lens production chamber. Deposition chamber in a custom-built machine that makes atomically precise lenses that focus X-ray beams to within a single nanometre. Inside this chamber, substrates travel along the central track and collect plasma-borne particles that form the lenses (a technique called sputter deposition). Once the completed materials are etched down to the proper size, they will be precisely designed to work with the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. Photographed in 2013.
