Caption: Gabriel Lippmann (1845-1921), French physicist, in his laboratory. Lippmann was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physics for his technique of colour photography based on the interference phenomenon. He was professor of experimental physics at the Sorbonne, Paris. Lippmann invented a sensitive mercury capillary electrometer, plus other designs for instruments including an astatic galvanometer, the coelostat for photography, and a new form of seismograph. He also deduced the piezoelectric effect. This artwork is based on a photograph taken by Dornac. Artwork from the 14th volume (second period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
