Caption: Strongman. Early 20th-century artwork of a strongman performer named 'Sascha' lifting a heavy weight attached to his hair. Aged 27 here, he was born in Mecklenburg, Germany. Also known as the 'New Samson', the 'Wire-Haired Gladiator' and the 'Wire-Haired Wonder', he performed at Coney Island's Dreamland Circus Sideshow in the USA during the 1910s. Artwork from the 25th volume (first period of 1900) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
