Caption: Ribonuclease enzyme. Molecular graphic of ribonuc- lease A (RNase-A), an enzyme which cleaves messen- ger Ribonucleic Acid (mRNA). Enzymes are proteins which act as biological catalysts, each one increasing the rate of a particular chemical reaction within the cell. RNase causes RNA molecules to split into individual nucleotides (mononucleotides). Like all proteins, ribonuclease-A is comprised of chains of amino acids. Messenger RNA carries the code for specific amino acid sequences from the cell's genetic material (Deoxyribonucleic Acid, DNA) to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis.
