Caption: Field's trans-Atlantic cable. Historical engraving showing men in the warehouse holding the transatlantic cable laid by Cyrus Field (1819-1892) between Ireland and USA in 1866. This was the first successful trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. It made the first transmission, between Europe and America, on 16th August 1858. From Weltall und Menscheit (Universe and Humanity), by Hans Kraemer (ca. 1880).
