Caption: Particle detector at Jefferson Lab. Part of the High Momentum Spectrometer (HMS), a particle detector in Hall C of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). Electrons from the accelerator strike a target and interact with it, producing a stream of particles. These pass into the HMS detector. Scintillator hodoscopes measure particle arrival time and drift chambers identify the angle of flight and position of each. Cerenkov detectors are used to identify particle type and energy. A dipole magnet at the front of the detector acts as a prism, making particle differentiation easier. Jefferson Lab is at Newport News, Virginia, USA.
