Caption: (Carl Friedrich) Louis Dohme (1837-1910), German-US pharmacist. Dohme and his brother Charles Emil Dohme (1843-1911) emigrated from Germany to the USA in 1852. Louis Dohme began working in Baltimore, Maryland, for local pharmacist Alpheus Phineas Sharp. Both Louis and his brother Charles studied at the Maryland College of Pharmacy, and the three men worked to create what became known as the Sharp and Dohme pharmaceutical company. In 1953, they merged with Merck and Company, forming Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD). As of 2014, this is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
