Caption: Hugo von Seeliger (1849-1924), German astronomer. Seeliger obtained his doctorate in Leipzig in 1872. He became Professor of Astronomy and Director of the observatory at the University of Munich in 1882, and would hold this position until his death 42 years later. He carried out much work on star catalogues. He was President of the Astronomische Gesellschaft from 1897 to 1921, and was made a knight ('Ritter'). His awards included Pour le Merite for Sciences and Arts (1915) and the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art (1900). Photographed in 1885 by Bavarian ducal court photographer Friedrich Mueller, at his studio in Munich, Germany.
