Synthetic DNA may have a use for long-range data storage, possibly all of the books in the Library of Congress in a strand of DNA that would fit in a coffee cup and would last for millions of years. Researchers have converted digital files into trits or triplet codes comprising zero, one and two instead of the usual binary code. Scientists can read the code and use it to build millions of DNA molecules. Color key: black=carbon, white=hydrogen, red=oxygen, blue=nitrogen, orange=phosphorus, and green=fluorine.
