Caption: Alumina sludge spill. Satellite image of alumina, a form of aluminium oxide, spilling from a containment reservoir (far right) in Ajka, Hungary, on 8th October 2010. Alumina is a waste product of refining bauxite by the Bayer process. The spill began on the 4th October, when part of the reservoir's dam collapsed. This caused approximately one million cubic meters of caustic sludge to spill into the surrounding area. The spill flooded a nearby village and town, causing 10 deaths and chemical burns in over 120 people. Image taken by the QuickBird satellite.
