Caption: Alois Alzheimer (1864-1915), German neuropathologist. Alzheimer studied medicine in Wurzburg and Berlin. He worked at the asylum in Frankfurt and continued his work in Munich. In 1906, Alzheimer described the signs and pathology of the commonest form of dementia, now known as Alzheimer's disease. This is typically a senile dementia, and involves changes in brain structure which were at that time not observable until after death. In 1912, Alzheimer was appointed Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland). However, he fell ill that year and never fully recovered, dying three years later.
