Caption: Galaxy and supermassive black hole. Composite image of a galaxy that contains a supermassive black hole at its centre. Here, the galaxy is a tiny point at centre and giant plumes of radiation can be seen extending to left and right. Jets such as these, generated by supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies, can transport huge amounts of energy across great distances. Imaged by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (purple) and radio data from NSF's Very Large Array (orange).
