Caption: Uterus anatomy. 19th century artworks showing the uterus, or womb, at different ages. Foetal uteri are at top right (youngest) and top left. At top centre are anterior (Fig. 3) and posterior (Fig.4) views of the uterus at birth. Fig. 5 and 6 show the uterus in the abdomen at birth. At centre are anterior (left) and profile (right) views of the reproductive organs of a 10 year old. At bottom centre is the uterus and vagina of an adult woman who has not had children. At bottom are the uteri and vaginas of a 71 year old that had children (right), and an 81 year old that had children (right). This anatomical artwork is plate 75 from volume 5 (1839) of 'Traite complet de l'anatomie de l'homme' (1831-1854). This 8-volume anatomy atlas was produced by the French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849). The illustrations were by Nicolas-Henri Jacob (1781-1871).
