Transoxiana, known in Arabic and Persian Mawarannahr, is the ancient name for the portion of Central Asia corresponding approximately with modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, southern Kyrgyzstan and southwest Kazakhstan. Geographically, it is the region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers.
