Caption: Sugar enzyme. Computer artwork of a molecule of the enzyme hexokinase (blue) with a molecule of glucose (yellow) bound to its active site. Enzymes are proteins that work as catalysts to speed up chemical reactions in the body. The active site is part of an enzyme that binds to a substance involved in the reaction (substrate) and is where the reaction takes place. Hexokinase promotes the conversion (phosphorylation) of the sugar glucose into glucose 6-phosphate in the body's cells. The cells then use the glucose 6-phosphate when the body requires energy.
