Caption: Harlequin ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis) hibernating in leaf litter. Originally from Asia, this ladybird is an invasive species introduced throughout North America, north-western Europe and the UK. It occurs in a number of different colour forms. Most of the individuals in this image are a variant with 18 black spots. In the middle is a black variant with 2 red eye-spots. The harlequin ladybird becomes dormant in cooler months, congregating in cool, dry, confined spaces to overwinter. Photographed in the UK.
