Caption: Cirrhosis of the liver. Cross-section through a the liver of an 58 year old female alcoholic patient. Cirrhosis is a disease in which bands of fibrosis (internal scarring) break up the internal structure of the liver. The surviving cells multiply to form regeneration nodules separated by scar tissue. This gives a cirrhotic liver a typical granulated aspect. Heavy alcohol consumption is the most common cause of cirrhosis in developed countries. Hepatitis, the inflammation of the liver, may also lead to cirrhosis. The most common symptoms are mild jaundice, oedema, mental confusion and vomiting of blood. Cirrhosis can be slowed by abstinence from alcohol; tissue damage is usually permanent.
