Caption: Arthritic fingers. X-ray of the fingers of a patient with erosive osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that results in the loss of cartilage between joints. In this case the finger joints are severely affected, which is characteristic of erosive osteoarthritis. The healing process has lead to the growth of bony swellings round the finger joints. These swellings are called Bouchard's nodes (middle joints) or Heberden's nodes (end joints), depending on which joints of the fingers are affected. They can be inflamed and painful, and often produce deformation of the fingers.
