Caption: A researcher examines ionic liquids in a chemistry laboratory. An ionic liquid is a salt in liquid state. Researchers at this US Air Force academy are developing a fast, environmentally friendly method to neutralize chemical warfare agents such as sarin and VX using certain ionic liquids. Follow-on research with ionic liquids will determine whether the room-temperature molten salts can neutralize certain biological agents. Photographed in 2010.
