Caption: Polycystic liver. Liver affected by polycystic liver disease (PLD). PLD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (fluid-filled sacs, centre) scattered throughout the normal liver tissue. An inherited chromosomal defect causes multiple cysts to invade and grow in the kidneys and liver, which compromises the normal function of these organs. The cysts gradually destroy the tissue and may eventually cause organ failure.
