Caption: Cirrhosis of the liver. Section through a gross specimen of a liver with cirrhosis. The normal liver tissue has been replaced with fibrous scar tissue. Cirrhosis is a degenerative disease that leads to thickening of the liver tissue and loss of function. It can be caused by toxins, most usually alcohol, metabolic disorders or viral hepatitis.
