DNA polymerase is an enzyme that aids DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) replication by catalysing the linking together (polymerisation) of the single units of DNA (deoxyribonucleotides). This occurs alongside a single DNA strand, which has been 'unzipped' from its partner strand, and is 'read' as a template. The newly-polymerised molecule (yellow and purple) is complementary to the template strand and identical to the template's partner strand.
