Caption: Bose-Einstein condensate, IBM research. IBM scientist Lijian Mai making adjustments to the dozens of lenses which control the strength of the laser used to create a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). Pioneering work at IBM Research demonstrated this complex quantum mechanical phenomenon using non-crystalline solid materials. The discovery, made using a luminescent polymer, has potential applications in developing novel optoelectronic devices including energy-efficient lasers and optical switches. Photographed in November 2013, at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland.
