Caption: Utley Wedge (1863-1948), US chemist. Utley worked for a number of metal refinery businesses throughout his life. He invented the Wedge furnace, a cylindrical furnace that contained a series of shelves, and the wedge stoker, as well as an acid-proof brick used to store chemicals.
