Caption: Spin-SEM equipment, IBM research. IBM scientist Rolf Allenspach (Manager Physics of Nanoscale Systems) with the spin-polarized scanning electron microscope (spin-SEM) in one of the 'noise-free' laboratories at the Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland. Acoustic dampening panels line the laboratory walls and the equipment is mounted on precision-engineered vibration isolation blocks. This instrument manipulates and detects magnetization on the nanometre scale, establishing the science of spintronics, the use of spin-based nanoscale devices for future computing. Photographed in December 2011.
