Caption: DOME microservers. Microserver circuit board using liquid-cooled 3D stacked chips technology. This small but powerful server, about the size of a bar of soap, is designed to contain most of the functions of larger servers. The microprocessor, based on IBM's PowerPC architecture, is inexpensive and extremely energy efficient. The intention is to 'desert proof' such microservers for use in the rugged extreme environmental conditions where elements of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope will be located. DOME is a collaboration between IBM and ASTRON (the Dutch foundation for astronomical research). Photographed in January 2013.
