Caption: Reaction between magnesium and solid carbon dioxide (dry ice). Magnesium turnings on a block of dry ice are ignited, and another dry ice block is placed over the top. An exothermic displacement reaction occurs where the magnesium displaces carbon to form magnesium oxide and elemental carbon. The reaction produces light and heat, illuminating the whole dry ice block. See K004 4911 for the products of the reaction.
