Caption: Decomposition of magnesium silicide (dark powder). Magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) is decomposed using dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution, the products being solid magnesium oxide (MgO) and silane gas (SiH4). The silane produced ignites spontaneously on contact with air in an explosive exothermic (heat-producing) reaction.
