Caption: Animation of the structure of a nephron, the functional unit of the kidneys. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and concentrate it in urine, which is passed to the bladder. Each kidney can contain over a million of these units. Each nephron receives blood from a capillary (red), which forms a tight coil called a glomerulus, surrounded by a Bowman's capsule (yellow). Blood plasma is filtered through the capillaries into the capsule, which passes the fluid into a tubule (yellow). This comprises thick-walled descending portions, thin-walled descending and ascending portions and a thick-walled ascending portion. In the tubule the urine is concentrated, and water reabsorbed. The urine is passed from the thick-walled ascending part of the tubule to the collecting ducts, which pass it to the bladder for excretion.
