Caption: Veterinary surgeon operating on an injured loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The surgeon is removing a fish hook swallowed by the turtle. Loggerhead turtles are particularly vulnerable to longline baited hooks used for catching tuna, as they take prey in a similar manner. Longline fishing is one of the main threats to loggerheads. Filmed at Lampedusa Turtle Rescue Centre, on Lampedusa, Italy. This isolated Mediterranean island is an important breeding ground for loggerhead turtles, one of the few remaining places in the Mediterranean on which they lay their eggs.
