Caption: Veterinary surgeon amputating the flipper of an injured loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The flipper was caught on a hook on a tuna longline. Longline fishing is one of the greatest threats to the survival of the endangered loggerhead turtle. Filmed at Lampedusa Turtle Rescue Centre, on Lampedusa, Italy. This isolated Mediterranean island is an important breeding ground for loggerhead turtles, one of the few remaining places in the Mediterranean on which they lay their eggs.
