Caption: Animation of the human brain, opening up to show the internal structures, and then the main pathways of some neurotransmitters. The largest part of the brain is the paired cerebral hemispheres (grey). One of these is removed to reveal the limbic system (blue). The pathways from production to use of three neurotransmitter chemicals are then shown. First, serotonin is produced in the caudal nuclei of the brain stem. The serotonin is then carried to every part of the brain, where it affects mood, arousal, attention and other aspects of consciousness. Dopamine is produced in the ventral tegmentum in the middle of the base of the brain. It travels to parts of the limbic system and the frontal lobes, where it controls cognition, memory, mood and control, as well as some motor functions. Finally, epinephrine (noradrenaline) is produced in the locus coeruleus of the brainstem, and also travel to much of the brain. Epinephrine also affects memory, cognition and reward, and also respiration, sleeping and hunger. Clip supplied with a transparent alpha channel background. For a version on a black background, see clip K004 2065.
