Caption: VLT and laser guide under star trails. Time-exposure image of star trails over the telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Laser Guide Star Facility (PARSEC) of the Paranal Observatory, Atacama desert, Chile. PARSEC produces an orange beam to create a guide star in the atmosphere. Operating since January 2006, the artificial guide star is used to calibrate the VLT telescopes to remove the effects of the atmosphere on observations, a process known as adaptive optics.
