Caption: Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Sorghum can grow in harsh conditions were other crops will not grow providing a staple food for millions in semi-arid areas. It is used as a forage crop for a wide range of livestock once some basic processing is done on the grains. Sweet sorghum is being trialled as a possible alternative to sugar cane in areas with lower rainfall. It also has the advantage of seed propagation. The production of ethanol from Sorghum may be a long term alternative to petroleum in countries like China with small economic petroleum reserves.
