Caption: City lights over Brazil. Timelapse video of the Earth from space, taken by the crew of Expedition 40 on board the International Space Station (ISS). This clip starts with the Sun disappearing over the horizon. Below is the Caribbean Sea and northern South America at night, with city lights and lightning visible in thunderstorms. The view passes south-east over eastern Brazil. The two largest cities inland are Brasilia and Belo Horizonte. The view then passes over Brazil's Atlantic coastline. The bright lights on the coastline are those of the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Vitoria. The view continues over the southern Atlantic Ocean as the orbit curves round to head north-east over the Indian Ocean. Near the end of the clip, there is a brief sighting of the aurora australis (southern lights, green) on the horizon. At the end of the clip, the bright light marks the moment the ISS moves out of the shadow of the Earth and back into the sunlight. In front of the camera is a Soyuz capsule docked to the ISS. This clip was taken during the night-time period of the ISS orbit that occurred between 23:45 GMT on 28 June 2014 and 00:32 GMT on 29 June 2014.
