Caption: Reduction of copper (II) oxide using carbon. Clip 1 of 6. This clip shows a mixture of copper (II) oxide (CuO) and carbon (C) being heated in a glass tube. This reaction reduces the oxide to copper metal (Cu), with the other product being carbon dioxide (CO2). The oxide and carbon are black, with a colour change to reddish-orange indicating the presence of the copper metal. For the full sequence, see clips K004/5556 to K004/5551.
